Safeguarding
The safety and wellbeing of all participants is a key priority at JUMP START. The requirements below allow us to commit to safeguarding young people taking part in the event.
Body Of Persons Approval (BOPA) and Chaperones
PENNY & JULES DANCE will be applying for a BOPA from Brighton & Hove City Council for HOSTED – U.Dance South East Regional Platform 2024. On Sunday 24 March 2024, if selected for HOSTED, your group will need to have at least two supervising adults. It is recommended that large mixed gender groups have three supervising adults. Soloists must be accompanied by two supervising adults.
For groups that include dancers aged 16 years or under, supervising adults must be a licensed chaperone or school teacher. Parents may only be chaperones for their own child. Each licensed chaperone may be responsible for no more than 12 children at any one time.
All supervising adults must have an enhanced Disclosures & Barring Service (DBS) check within 1 year and/or registered on the online DBS update service and be able to provide their DBS reference number.
The Safeguarding Lead at your organisation/school/group must be in receipt of two satisfactory references for each adult accompanying young people, including from their most recent employment that involved working with children/young people. If you have any concerns or queries about this, please contact South East Dance.
PENNY & JULES DANCE will provide full details of what information to provide for the BOPA to all selected groups / soloists.
Safeguarding
Please consider the safety and well-being of your dancers during rehearsals, filming and attending the event. Please refer to your organisation/school/group’s safeguarding policy when working with children and young people.
Your dance piece must be appropriate for a family audience of all ages.
Please consider any potentially triggering content in your piece and discuss with South East Dance and PENNY & JULES DANCE at the earliest opportunity.
Content: Only include age appropriate movements, themes and issues for your group. Please consider how the piece will come across to your audience.
Costumes: No revealing costumes, no costumes with a nude effect, no costumes that sexualise young people. Please ensure all costumes are age appropriate for the dancers.
Event organisers reserve the right to stop any groups with inappropriate costumes appearing in the HOSTED platform.
Music: No swearing, no violent language and no explicit or age inappropriate content.

Public Liability Insurance
Please be prepared to provide proof of Public Liability Insurance (PLI) cover if selected for HOSTED.
You may have your own individual PLI cover for working with your group, or this might be your school or organisation’s PLI that covers you/the group leader/teacher for working with this group.
Please contact Sarah Kearney at South East Dance if you have any questions about Public Liability Insurance. Email contact: sarah.kearney@southeastdance.org.uk
