Our History

South East Dance was established in 1997 to support dance artists based in the South East region to develop their careers.

In 2000 we became a member of the UK Dance Network and an Arts Council England Regularly Funded Organisation, extending our role to work nationally and internationally.

Since then we’ve continued to support dance artists and develop the infrastructure for dance whilst presenting bold new work and creating opportunities for more people to experience dance and see what it can mean for them. All of our projects share and reflect our beliefs of excellence, creativity, risk, collaboration, openness and the importance of community.

For more than 12 years we have been advocating and building support for a dedicated home for dance in the South East: The Dance Space. In 2014, the passionate support of Brighton & Hove City Council was endorsed by a £925,000 funding award from Arts Council England, and we were able to kickstart our capital fundraising campaign to make The Dance Space a reality.

The launch of The Dance Space in 2022 sees South East Dance in our own home for the first time in our history, heralding a new era for us and for dance in the region.  It is a space where talented artists can explore, collaborate and create; a space where local people can discover and get involved in dance on their doorstep.
