Contact Improvisation
Join us for a deep practice of contemplative dance, connection and gentle acrobatics with carefully selected music.
Contact Improvisation is a close body contact exploratory movement research, rooted in contemporary dance form using physical contact, weight sharing and momentum to explore kinetic possibilities in an improvised flow. It ranges from meditative slow floor work to dynamic acrobatic lifts.
It is a social dance, although you don’t need to come with a partner, you will practice with different partners during the class. During the jam you may choose a partner, dance solo, dance in trio/quartet, or rest and simply watch others to get inspired, we like to inspire each other.
The jam includes an eclectic mix of instrumental and lyrical music, mostly subtle pieces with soft rhythms, some more contemplative pieces; a variety of genres from minimal soundscapes through slow world music rhythms, electronic downtempo to classical strings and piano.
These sessions are open level and suitable for complete beginners, there will be a mix of basics and more advanced exercises. If something is too difficult you may attempt it, do something similar or take a break and watch. Only attending the jam is not suitable for beginners - you must attend at least one class before joining a jam. The best option is to warm up during the class, meet all the dancers, and then dance away at the jam.
Contact Improvisation is a close/full body contact, however we avoid intentional touch of sensitive body areas. Inappropriate touch will be dealt with accordingly and an offender may be removed from the session or even banned permanently.
