The Welcome Project: What We Set Out To Achieve
Part one of an evaluation of the first three years of The Welcome Project.
We launched The Welcome Project as a way of getting to know the people and organisations that will be our neighbours.
In 2017 we launched The Welcome Project as a way of getting to know the people and organisations that will be our neighbours, and hopefully our visitors, when we open The Dance Space in 2022.
We wanted people who lived in the area to get to know us too, understand what The Dance Space is, and feel like it is a place they want to be a part of.
The Dance Space is located in the Tarner neighbourhood of Brighton & Hove. Brighton is a city that, despite its reputation as a wealthy, culturally rich seaside location, contains areas like Tarner, an East Brighton neighbourhood, which is among the least advantaged in England (IMD, 2019).
Through The Welcome Project, we set out to build relationships with people who live, work and use the services of community organisations in Tarner and to collaborate with them to create a programme of dance-related activities. We also wanted to challenge preconceived ideas about what dance is, who it’s for and what it can achieve and encourage more people to have a go at dance and see what happens.
