Celebrating The Welcome Project – The Story So Far
Our vision at South East Dance is a world where every body is empowered to create, take part in and enjoy dance in all its forms.
We help people to discover their own relationship with dance, working with them to create the type of activities they want. And we work with artists who are committed to taking creative risks, pushing boundaries and challenging perceptions of what dance is and can be.
Our Welcome Project is a prime example of our vision in practice. Launched in 2017, The Welcome Project is our way of getting to know and creating dance with the communities living and working in the area around The Dance Space. We’ve been working with partners on the doorstep - including Brooke Mead Extra Care Facility and Brighton Unemployed Centre Families Project, as well as our Community Steering Group made up of people connected with the area - to design dance activities for the local community to enjoy.
We recently celebrated three years of The Welcome Project and as part of that milestone we have been reflecting on what we’ve learned along the way.
We gathered the information presented below through a range of methods: by collecting statistics; by talking to the artists, partners, and volunteers who have helped to deliver the project; and to the participants and audiences who have taken part.
The Welcome Project is supported by Brighton & Hove City Council, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Legal & General plc, Maria Björnson Memorial Fund, Ernest Kleinwort Charitable Trust and Brighton & Hove Buses.
