Indian Creative Vocabulary for Dancers & Movers

21, 28 July

What can Indian Classical dance philosophy offer contemporary movers and performance-makers today?

This workshop invites participants to be introduced to and explore the creative principles, movement language and philosophical foundations of Odissi, an Indian classical dance form originating in Eastern India.

Designed for dancers and movers of any background and experience level, the sessions bring together movement, imagination and reflective discussions. Participants can explore how Indian creative philosophy can enrich physical expression and choreographic thinking – all while discovering new ways of moving, storytelling and embodiment.

The workshop opens up a space for exploring Odissi and Indian Classical dance forms as vocabulary that can deepen existing movement practices and artistic research.

What to expect:

Sessions may include –

· Grounding exercises rooted in Indian Classical philosophy and awareness

· Guided movement exploration inspired by Odissi

· Playful improvisation and tasks around concepts such as Pallavi (the unfolding or blossoming of movement and rhythm)

· Introduction to hand gestures or mudras, their symbolism and meaning

· Group discussion and reflection around movement and cultural philosophy

Who is it for?

These workshops are open to:

· Dancers of any style

· Performance artists with some experience of movement

· Choreographers interested in intercultural approaches to movement

While this workshop doesn’t require prior experience of Indian dance forms, some experience of movement is essential.

The workshops are designed to be welcoming and adaptable to different levels of movement experience. Tasks can be approached gently and according to participants’ needs and comfort levels.
