Simb Lion Dance workshops

Join Palaye Seck, a Senegalese cultural practitioner, dancer and choreographer with 20+ years experience, as he hosts a 12-Simb programme (weekly workshops), culminating in a full day symposium at South East Dance on Sunday 6th December, combining workshops, performance and Q&A.

Simb is a powerful and theatrical Senegalese Lion Dance that merges movement, music and storytelling.

This 12-week programme will gather 20+ African heritage/early-career dance artists to learn a unique physical vocabulary, rhythm and movement language, culminating in a live performance, providing all dancers with a professional showcase experience and sector visibility.

Ideally you will be able to attend the full programme, however if not possible, we would need those signing up to be able to attend a minimum of six workshops in order to be able to perform in the Symposium.

The full day Symposium will take place on Sunday 6 December, staging a large-scale Simb performance, giving participants the chance to perform alongside five professional Lion Dancers and an ensemble of Senegalese drummers and musicians; and showcasing their skills developed via the workshop programme.

Supported by South East Dance.

We are offering 10 X £100 bursary places for this programme to early career dance artists of African heritage and/or those on low incomes. Find out more here and below. The deadline for applications is 6pm on Friday 31st July.
