Our Brighton Fringe Award Winner: “Playful, mesmerising and creatively accessible”

Congratulations to Head Over Wheels for Anchored in Air, their groundbreaking aerial theatre production redefining contemporary circus.

Head Over Wheels

Every year we select an outstanding dance work to receive our Brighton Fringe Award. This year, the award went to Anchored in Air by Head Over Wheels: a groundbreaking aerial theatre production redefining contemporary circus with its gentle, generous, inclusive approach.

Anchored in Air seamlessly weaves together circus, dance, creative audio description, and live music, taking audiences on a carefully structured journey with the performers.

“Poetic approach to audio description”

Linzi Whitton, Head of Programme at South East Dance, praised how the company translated a piece of outdoor work for presentation in a circus tent, and said:

"The accessible elements were creative and considered, especially with the poetic approach to audio description. It was gentle and playful, and took audiences on a journey with the performers – the kids were mesmerised."

What's next

Head Over Wheels said: "We are beyond honoured to have been chosen for this award! As a relatively new company and very small team, the support and recognition make it all worth it. We're excited to utilise the support this award offers for the development of our next show."

Their second production, "Mummy, What's Wrong with That Man's Legs?", will be a dance and circus theatre show for children exploring the social model of disability.

The recognition

Head Over Wheels wins:

  • 20 hours of free studio space at The Dance Space
  • A mentoring and advice session with the South East Dance producing team
  • A bottle of bubbly to celebrate!
