DEFFUTURISMO/ DARKRUIM
For the first time in the UK Disabled/Crip Dance Artist João Paulo Lima (BR) brings an exclusive preview of his potent double bill DEFFUTURISMO & DARKRUIM to audiences in Brighton.
An evening of dance that broadens our perspectives on the body with disability, ecology, futurism, gender and sexuality to create new possibilities and aesthetics for dance as an art form of the future.
DEFFUTURISMO sparks urgent and impactful reflections, led by an artist with multiple intersecting identities: disabled, gay, from Ceará, 40+.
Lived experience, research, and direct engagement in disability rights activism shape this deffuturist identity, exploring the complex relationship between disability, climate change, and the strengthening and creation of public policies.
DARKRUIM is a dance solo about dissident bodies and the search for spaces of (im)possibility In a world where norms dictate standards of beauty and acceptance, bodies that defy this normativity are often marginalised and excluded. It is within this context that DARKRUIM emerges, a compelling and provocative solo dance performance conceived and performed by João Paulo Lima. The work invites us into a sensitive immersion into the lived experiences of a body with a disability, in its ongoing search for spaces of belonging and acceptance. It reveals the complex nuances of bodily and sexual self-discovery within a context shaped by ableism and hegemonic standards.
