Dance and Moving Image

A four week, open access, online course led by Becky Edmunds

Discover a new way of seeing movement on screen with Dance and Moving Image — a dynamic, hands-on course that brings together dance and filmmaking in a creative, exploratory environment. Open to all levels, this course invites participants to reimagine the possibilities of film through the lens of choreography and embodiment.

Led by multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker Becky Edmunds and delivered across 4 online sessions - you’ll dive into film screenings, group discussions, and practical creative tasks that unpack how movement operates within the frame. You'll explore how the camera responds to and shapes movement, how editing influences rhythm and energy, and how sound adds depth to the visual. Together, we’ll investigate how screen-based work can speak to the viewer physically — engaging the senses and the body.

Who is it for?

No prior technical experience is necessary. Whether you're a dancer curious about film, a filmmaker ready to rethink your process, or someone entirely new to both, you'll be encouraged to bring what you have — or start from scratch. If you already have a background in filmmaking, this course offers a chance to shift your perspective, using movement as the foundation for experimentation.

This is not about learning the rules of how films should be made. It’s about discovering what happens when we start with the body — and imagine how films could be made.

Practical info
The course will run on zoom (which makes this course accessible for people from across the UK and beyond), on Thursday evenings between 6-9pm (with a break) as follows:

You’ll also receive exclusive invites to Brighton Screendance Festival events- which is run by South East Dance at The Dance Space in Brighton, between 7-9 November 2025.

Becky Edmunds (she / her)

Becky Edmunds is a multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker whose work sits at the intersection of choreography, documentary, and the moving image. With an early background in dance and choreography, Becky spent the first part of her career working in live performance before shifting her focus to screen-based work in 2000.

Her practice brings a choreographic sensibility to filmmaking, weaving together rhythm, pattern, and the dynamic flow of movement with an observational documentary approach. The result is a body of work that blends the constructed and the real — hybrid films and installations that have been screened at festivals around the world.

Becky’s recent work includes To Be Continued, a 27-episode web series that animates found journals through the reuse of archival footage, offering a unique lens on memory, narrative, and reimagined histories.

Alongside her film work, Becky also maintains a textile art practice, with a focus on hand stitching. She teaches moving image practice at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.

More to explore

A group of dancers cluster gently around the central figure, Hannah - a white person with Down syndrome - who gazes directly into the camera. The others surround her in a soft, intricate tangle: arms cradling heads, hands draped over shoulders, torsos leaning into one another with quiet connection. While the surrounding dancers look outwards or towards each other, Hannah’s steady gaze holds the lens. All wear flesh-toned clothing, blurring the lines between bodies.
