Rapport - International Artists' Residency
Rap: talk or chat in an easy and familiar manner.
Port: A safe haven or harbour.
As part of our charitable aim of supporting a healthy and diverse dance sector, we want to encourage a flow of culture, ideas and practice between UK and international dance artists and institutions.
Thanks to the generous support of The Leche Trust and The Garrick Charitable Trust, we established RAPPORT in 2022 to help realise this vision by creating an international exchange programme for dance artists.
RAPPORT sees The Dance Space playing host to international dance artists who develop dialogues and share their practice with our local communities, artists and partners and embed themselves into our programmes at South East Dance. RAPPORT supports UK dance artists to do the same in residence with our international partners overseas.
Through RAPPORT, during our 2022/23 season, we welcomed artists Emma Harrison and Amy Flannery (Australia), and Sara Sguotti (Italy) to The Dance Space. During our 2023/24 season we supported two UK artists to develop their practice overseas. In March 2023 Jennifer Irons spent three weeks with Dance Makers Collective in Sydney; and Liam Francis visited ARTEFICI in Italy to connect with their local creatives. In 2024/25 we are inviting Eliza Cooper and Mitchell Christie (Australia) to join us in residence.
The programme is made possible through partnerships with international dance organisations, including Australia’s only collective-led dance company Dance Makers Collective, Sydney; ARTEFICI: ResidenzeCreative, Gorizia Italy, and Festival Quartiers Danses, Montreal, Canada.
