Propel

Title of piece: Games

Choreographer: Joel O’Donoghue and the dancers

Music track: Butterflies - Anchorsong

About the Piece: This piece grew out of a simple observation: the dancers responded best to play. At the start of each session, a tag-like game evolved week by week, with new rules, props and challenges added each time. Inspired by playground games including tag, hopscotch, Simon Says and musical chairs, this work celebrates the joy of imagination, collaboration and embracing our collective inner child.

About Propel: Propel is a contemporary dance class for ages 11-14, embracing different learning styles and celebrating individuality and creativity. The group explore contemporary dance movement, choreographic approaches and improvisation. At AllWays Dance we celebrate three years of Propel and the culmination of the programme, which finishes with them dancing together for the last time in Our City Dances on 25 July!

Propel is made possible with funding from The 29th May 1961 Charity

Title of piece: In Her Steps

Choreographer: Phoebe Tompsett (in collaboration with the dancers)

Videographer: Rosie Powell

Danced by: Project Flux

Film classification: U. Universal - Suitable for all

About the piece: In Her Steps explores what it’s like to navigate a world where safety is not guaranteed. This piece reflects the strength of women reclaiming their spaces, confronting fear, and asserting their right to move freely. Over 70% of women in the UK report experiencing sexual harassment in public. Globally, almost 9 in 10 women feel unsafe in public spaces. These statistics are more than numbers—they are lived realities.

Almost every woman knows the feeling of walking home with keys clenched between fingers, a phone ready in hand, and eyes glancing back every few seconds. When safety is compromised—whether on the journey home, in the workplace, or in a shared public space—our movements are restricted. Boundaries close in. Life shrinks. In Her Steps responds to this pervasive experience and explores what it’s like to navigate a world where safety is not guaranteed. This piece reflects the strength of women reclaiming their spaces, confronting fear, and asserting their right to move freely.

Content/trigger warnings: This film addresses themes of women's safety, sexual harassment, fear of violence, vulnerability in public spaces, and gender-based intimidation. It explores the emotional impact of feeling unsafe and may resonate strongly with viewers who have experienced harassment, stalking, assault, or related trauma.
