Introduction to Vertical Dance - beginners & intermediate
Vertical dance - what’s that?
Vertical dance refers to the plane on which the dance exploration happens. Using climbing harnesses and equipment we upend the dance floor by 90 degrees, using the wall as our dance floor. It’s liberating, fun, at times strenuous and wonderfully discombobulating!
Day one Sat 2 November: Vertical dance - introduction/beginner level
Beginning with a short warm up we’ll introduce the rigging equipment we’ll be working with before moving onto basic orientation on the wall.
We’ll progress through some vertical dance vocabulary and build towards learning jumps and rotations and linking choreography.
Day two Sun 3 November: Vertical dance – intermediate level
Note: You must have attended previous vertical dance trainings, (more than 1) or performed vertical dance. If not, then please don’t join this class as it will be frustrating for both yourself and your fellow classmates and we want everyone to be happy!
After a short warm up we’ll begin by checking in on the specific rigging kit we’ll be using for this class. We’ll touch on basic orientation and acclimatising to this wall to find common ground before building towards more complex sequencing and shifting through gloriously discombobulating planes alongside tasks and creative exercises, to help you find your groove on the wall.
Pre-requisites:
You should be confident and have some experience in demonstrating:
Planks on different planes
Finding your balance point on feet or hands under the rigging point
Jumping away and returning to the wall – with control!
Some experience of rotations (basic forward & back somys) and cartwheels on the wall.
NB None of these have to be perfect!
