This Autumn, we had hoped to welcome you to the opening season in our brand-new home for dance, The Dance Space. Sadly, this has not been possible, for many reasons, of which I am sure we are all aware and probably a bit tired of hearing about. We had planned a fantastic season of 20 artists, with 20 works, so rather than cancel this, we want to introduce you to those 20 artists who will take part in our opening programme at the Dance Space next year. To help you get to know the artists who will be making our dance house their own when it opens, and to get a greater sense of their influences, we have asked each of them to select a screen dance short created by another artist, and explain why they have chosen this work.
Alongside these 20 artists, we have invited our Welcome Project Community Steering Group to select one film each month and finally, for the last piece of the programming jigsaw, the South East Dance Team will choose one or two films for each instalment. These will be films that reflect a part of our own history as a screen dance agency back in the 1990s, the wider history of dance on screen, or films that we feel ensures a diversity of perspectives in the programme, making sure to include work from our very youngest digital makers.
We will release a selection of films each month, and invite you to take part in some online conversations with the artists as part of this season.
The sheer range and scope of the artists’ choices is exhilarating, and I can’t wait to share these with you over the next four months.
We hope you will enjoy this artistic programme - created together with our artists and communities – and find it a bold and compelling challenge to our cultural narratives.
Take a breath... and come on through.
