2020 Vision #2: Alexandrina Hemsley

Alexandrina Hemsley’s practice is shaped by the morphing disciplines of dance, dance for camera, live art, theatre, mentoring, creative and critical writing

Alexandrina Hemsley

Driven by an interest in fracturing, connectivity, displacement & emotionality, Alexandrina hopes to find and share ways of expressing felt, lived realities. They work with intricate improvisation scores and vivid performance environments which insist on conjuring embodied enquiries into a multiplicity of voices. This includes work within organisations around anti-racism, anti-ableism and embodied advocacy. It is a life-long, nuanced undertaking. Alexandrina is Associate Artist at Cambridge Junction, Board Member of Chisenhale Dance Space and International Associate Artist 2020/21 at Dance Ireland.

Alexandrina has recently founded the organisation Yewande 103, for which they are Creative Director. Yewande 103 formalises the past ten years of Alexandrina's work in the contemporary dance field as a choreographer, performer, writer, mentor and educator.

Alexandrina says: "This film moves me with its gentle, detailed occupying of space.

"I am let in on a person’s private right to be. To express colour, layers, memory and journeying as tapestry.  The crafted play and movement of light across the screen, the soft flickering present in each shot feels like a visual humming.

"The accumulation of shots leading to a kind of birthing loop of movement; grounding, releasing, descending, becoming, holds me as witness. A hope/night time dream of owning oneself and in some way, owning space; body, psychic, geographical, emotional."

2020 Vision is our celebration of screen dance curated by the artists who will take part in the opening programme of The Dance Space next year, as well as the South East Dance team and our Welcome Project Community Steering Group.

We would really appreciate you taking time to complete this short survey on your experience of 2020 Vision. It's important to us to find out what you thought of the programme, so we can refine and tailor our programmes to what you want to see. We also have to report back to our funders, so we need as much feedback as possible for them. Once again, thanks for your time and attention.

Although we are bringing you this content for free, we are fundraising to help South East based dance artists affected by COVID-19 who have, in many cases, lost almost their entire incomes overnight. If you are able to donate, any amount is welcome. Thank you.
