Born to Manifest
By Joseph Toonga

Joseph Toonga originates from Cameroon and was raised in East London. Rooted in the Hip Hop culture and form he has established himself as a fore fronting change maker for the scene. He continually looks for authentic reasoning for choreographing and his expertise enables him to engage with other individuals and communities in order to bring stories foreword and empower people during both his research and live performances. Alongside extensive teaching and independent commissions, Joseph runs his dance company Just Us Dance Theatre, a for fronting organisation actively supporting early career artists, connecting communities globally and upskilling young performers & creatives. He is also co-founder of break through artist-led hip-hop initiative Artists4Artists.

Rose says: “Having recently discovered Joseph's films, they called out to me personally, myself deeply affected by the issues illuminated through his choreography, most notably the loss of my African father when I was a child due to systemic racism in the UK. The performances make great and effective use of different outdoor sites. They are gentle but powerful, affecting, intimate and extremely relevant and important yesterday, today and every day that passes."

Joseph Toonga says: "The Born to Manifest series came out of the theatre work Born to Manifest which we successfully toured 2019/2020 to 14 different venues across the UK. It stirred up some great conversations, so we knew it had a longer life.

"It is a double bill that draws upon real life accounts to illuminate the systematic racial cycles and their impact on black British men. It’s a responsive piece of work so responding to the current COVID pandemic and creating work to live in new spaces seemed the perfect way to develop the work before touring it again in 2021."

We are delighted to be presenting parts I, III and IV of the Born to Manifest series for 2020 Vision.

2020 Vision is our celebration of screen dance curated by the artists who will take part in the opening programme of The Dance Space next year, as well as the South East Dance team and our Welcome Project Community Steering Group.

We would really appreciate you taking time to complete this short survey on your experience of 2020 Vision. It's important to us to find out what you thought of the programme, so we can refine and tailor our programmes to what you want to see. We also have to report back to our funders, so we need as much feedback as possible for them. Once again, thanks for your time and attention.

Thanks to the generosity of our funders and supporters, we are delighted to share this content with you for free. As an arts charity, however, we have to continue to fundraise - not only to complete the build and fit-out of The Dance Space, but also to ensure that the positive impact of our work can be felt by more people across the South East region. Please give what you can; every donation, large or small, is welcome. Thank you.
