South East Dance - The Dance Space Issue

Welcome to The Dance Space Issue.

Circus Street Market, the future home of The Dance Space, will shortly begin its decommissioning phase. This means that soon the space will no longer be open to the public. We wanted to take a moment to reflect on all of the vibrant performances, workshops and installations that we have programmed in the market over the past two years, and to look forward to what is being created in its place.

Circus Street Retrospective

Dancer in Circus StreetCircus Street Market is majestic. It is a vast space in the heart of a packed-in, shoulder to shoulder, bursting at the seams city. It was itself once lively and bustling as a fruit and veg market but has been empty for many years now, left to the pigeons, the foxes and the occasional ravers.

We have gathered memories and reflections from various people who have engaged with Circus Street over the past two years.

The Dance Space Vision

Jamie Watton in Circus StreetCEO/Artistic Director of South East Dance, Jamie Watton, is at the helm of all things, The Dance Space. We asked him to articulate his vision for the space.

Just by having a 'home' it means we can invite people in. We can host them, we can introduce them to other people. We can have some fun...I can't wait to connect artists and communities working in Brighton to those working across the UK and beyond.

Theo Clinkard - Snap Shot

Theo Clinkard 'Of Land and Tongue'Each month we invite an artist to give us an insight into an image from their work. This month Theo Clinkard writes about a photograph from his double-bill performance at Circus Street last June.

I selected this image from my recent company work Of Land and Tongue, mostly because it makes me want to shout, "what the hell is going on there?"

Q&A with Lee Halligan

Lee HalliganLee Halligan is an Associate at ShedKM Architects and Project Director for the Circus Street development. His team are currently designing The Dance Space.

Q: What does dance mean to you?

A: To be honest, dance music and going to the Cream nightclub in Liverpool every weekend between the age of 17 and 21. Dancing in amazing warehouses like that made a huge impression on me.

What will The Dance Space mean?

Charlie Morrissey 'Where the Land Meets the Sea'Brighton dance artist Charlie Morrissey shares his musings around what The Dance Space will mean to those living in Brighton & Hove and beyond.

The solidity of a building will, I hope, provide a real anchor for the dance community. The fact that it will continue to be there tomorrow, and tomorrow, could provide a confidence in a future, and therefore a context around which to plan and develop sustainable and ambitious dance activity, both within the building and across the city.

Watch This Space

Circus Street roofWhether you are local to Brighton & Hove or an occasional visitor, keep your eyes peeled in the coming months for some intriguing developments across the city that will point towards The Dance Space...

And finally, for one of your last chances to see Circus Street before it is closed to the public, why not visit Gauge, part of Brighton Festival this May; a playground of investigation into weather, water and scale, developed by Australian creators Madeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey.
