Generating Exceptional
Experiences in Dance

The Dance Space

South East Dance Studios image

Award-winning Shedkm has been appointed as the architect for the Circus Street (Brighton) development where our new home The Dance Space will be sited. We're currently in the midst of the design stage and working to submit a detailed planning application, alongside our Stage 2 application to secure capital funding from Arts Council England. It is crucial we meet our fundraising target to ensure The Dance Space becomes a reality. In the near future we will be sharing how you can get actively involved in what is a very exciting project.

South East Dance Studios - Economic Impact

Theo Clinkard rehearsal at South East Dance Studios

In 2012 we commissioned a detailed Social and Economic Impact Study of the first year of operations at our Studios in Kent. Evidence shows we have created 183 days of artist employment, contributed to 42 new pieces of work, generated a significant financial output for the economy in Kent and demonstrated an increase in employment, and user numbers. Michael Hill OBE, Cabinet Member for Customer and Communities, Kent County Council, praised South East Dance "for outstanding performance in the first year of South East Dance Studios".

Three Score Dance Company

Three Score Dance Company performance 2012

In December 2012 Three Score Dance Company presented its first performance evening with work created by Bettina Strickler and our Associate Artists Toni Grove and Ben Duke to an invited audience at the Brighton Dome, Studio Theatre. A resounding success, the evening also raised funds, matched by Arts Council England's Catalyst programme, to support the company's future development.

DanSCe Dialogues 2

Having successfully secured investment from European fund Interreg in December 2012, DanSCe Dialogues 2 will celebrate its English launch with its Anglo-French collaborators and artists in Brighton in March. The project will see partners investing in a cultural exchange through commissioning new work, residencies and professional development opportunities for artists on both sides of the Channel.

SED and The Basement

Lisbeth Gruwez

South East Dance is delighted to be celebrating its fourth year of a successful collaboration with The Basement as a co-programming partner in Brighton. Both partners are committed to bringing international work that extends the boundaries of dance and contemporary performance to the city - this spring, we co-present Giulio D'Anna (The Netherlands/Italy) and Lisbeth Gruwez (Belgium).

Hetain Patel

Elephant - Hetain Patel

Hetain Patel is a multidisciplinary artist, working across the visual and performing arts. His practice explores the subtle and often humorous complexities of identity formation. Fresh from a U.K theatre tour of his current live performance Be Like Water, he is currently making a four-man comedy theatre show, Elephant, for Southbank Centre (April 2013). In parallel he is also developing a new solo performance in tandem with his first sculptural and animation works. His recent solo exhibition of photography and video works, At Home, continues to tour nationally. More...

Dad Dancing

Dad Dancing rehearsal

A playful exploration of father-child relationships, Dad Dancing is a collaboration between Rosie Heafford, Alexandrina Hemsley and Helena Webb of Second Hand Dance, and their dads Adrian, David and Andy: "The need to explore this project has evolved from the ever-present misunderstandings of fathers for their children's work alongside the state of perplexity that contemporary dance can leave an audience in". Two months of research and development in autumn 2012 led to a series of scratch performances throughout the winter, and the company are next performing at G Live in Guildford on 26 February. And Finally...

On 16 March South East Dance will present U.Dance South East 2013, celebrating and showcasing excellence in youth dance from across the region. It will be hosted by The Stag Theatre in Sevenoaks, Kent. More...
