Big Dance success

big dance reckless sleepersAnother summer, another Big Dance! Once again we were thrilled to be leading some fantastic activity as part of the national celebration that is Big Dance. Against a backdrop of sunshine and some pretty heavy showers, we got out there and got dancing with some brilliant new commissions in museums, shopping centres and galleries in Brighton and Kent as well as supporting our partners across the wider region with their own Big Dance activity. Highlights included women with handsaws destroying old chairs (Reckless Sleepers) and town-centre shoppers being surprised by Protein's pop-up dance in torrential rain! Check out the pictures on our website.

Flourish Fund - round two

flourish fund promo imageThe second round of our Flourish Fund has now been awarded and we are excited to be supporting the creative and professional growth of five new artists in the coming months. The recipients are four artists who are part of Butoh Brighton, supported to train with Natsu Nakajima; and Zoie Golding, who is receiving mentoring. Previously, the Flourish Fund has supported Rachel Birch-Lawson in her work with a dramaturg, Laura Mergny to attend Youth Arts Project Management training, and Eva Daurios to undertake mentoring.  Keep your eyes peeled for another opportunity to apply this autumn.

New Chichester MA

choreographyThis September the University of Chichester launches the new MA Choreography and Professional Practices, which examines innovative and experimental approaches to choreographic practice, research and scholarship. We have worked closely with them to develop the 'Artists as Producers' module as part of this, which we will also support the delivery of in the spring term. We're particularly pleased to be working with their fantastic dance faculty to bring our expertise to the table, drawing on our wide range of sector networks in creating what we hope will become a flagship new learning opportunity for the dance professionals of the future.

Upcoming highlights

European Aerial Dance Festival (EADF)

eadf promo imagesNext month the EADF returns - back and bigger than ever! Delivered by Gravity & Levity in association with South East Dance and Brighton Dome for the 5th year running, this unique learning experience for aerial dancers comes to Brighton from 4-10 August with a whole host of new classes and activities. A hugely popular course, it is now fully booked for this year, but if you're scheduled to join us and want to whet your appetite (or are just intrigued to find out more) click here to take a look at the short film from the EADF 2013.

Casting Traces at Circus Street

casting traces Following a successful Grants for the Arts application by New Movement Collective to redevelop their 2012 work Casting Traces, we're pleased to be hosting the Brighton premiere of this brand new piece from 28-30 August. A promenade performance set in a paper labyrinth with live camera feeds and projections, Casting Traces is inspired by the themes of detective novels and the modern issues of ever-present surveillance. The latest in a series of new and re-imagined works for the Circus Street Market space, it follows successful shows by Theo Clinkard and Reckless Sleepers earlier this summer. Black Dance Archives

black dance archives project imageTake a trip to our studios in Hextable, Kent from early September to catch a free exhibition as part of State of Emergency's Black Dance Archives Project. This unique project aims to capture, record and celebrate the contribution of British Black Dance to the wider dance ecology and to our national cultural life, and we are delighted to be a host venue and a supporter. The exhibition will show archive collections from 28 celebrated individuals and organisations from the past 60 years, whilst the wider project includes a two-year programme of dynamic dance activity which will animate this fascinating archive and body of work. Keep an eye on our website for exact dates and opening times coming soon.
